Financial Analysis interview preparation
The three statements, working capital, ratios, forecasting, variance analysis, costing, capital budgeting, valuation and the modelling and Excel work that fills the day, plus the fit questions about why this seat. Every question is either traced to a named firm from a public candidate report, or tagged at desk level when we could not trace it — we do not invent attributions.

099Describe a project you have worked on, and a time you worked with data.Wellington ManagementGeneralist · Boston · 2024BlackRockRisk Management · Atlanta · 2025
Say this
One project, told in four beats: the question you were answering, the data and what was wrong with it, what you did, and what changed because of it. The data half is really asking whether you have handled messy real data or only clean coursework data.
Then walk it
- Lead with the business question, not the tools. 'We did not know which customers were unprofitable after discounts and freight' is a better opening than 'I used Python and Power BI'.
- Then be honest about the data, because this is the differentiator. How many rows, how many sources, and what was wrong: duplicate customer codes, inconsistent units, missing freight allocation, three systems that disagreed on the customer master. Anyone who has done real analysis can describe the mess.
- Then the method and one judgement call you had to make. For example, allocating freight by weight rather than by revenue, and why that choice changes the answer. Judgement calls are what interviewers probe, so bring one deliberately.
- Then the result with a number and a consequence. '14 percent of customers were loss-making after landed cost, and renegotiating the worst twenty moved gross margin 60 basis points.' No number, no story.
- Then what you would do differently, which is the most credible part. 'I should have validated the customer master with the sales team before building the model; I rebuilt a week of work because of it.'
- Have two versions ready, one where the project succeeded and one where it did not, because the follow-up is often about a project that failed. And keep the first telling to two minutes.
Where candidates lose it
Describing responsibilities instead of a result, or describing a clean dataset. The data question is specifically probing whether you have cleaned messy real data and made a defensible judgement call about it. Bring the mess and bring a number.
Expect next
- What was the hardest part of the data work?
- Tell me about a project that failed.
- How did you check that your answer was right?

Firm tags come from public, anonymous candidate reports on Wall Street Oasis: strong signal, not sworn testimony. Firms are named as the places a question was reported, not as partners of Fin Maverick. Answers are written for this page to show how to think out loud; they are not scripts to recite.
