Adviser vs Distributor vs Agent vs Educator

The four differ on five criteria: what each is permitted to do, who pays each, what each answers for, what each may tell a household, and what each cannot. An educator explains mechanisms and never addresses a position. A distributor places what others manufacture and is paid by them. An agent places for one principal. A registered adviser may advise, and is paid under the arrangement its category permits.

Three people approached one invented household inside a single month, and all three were entirely lawful. The lawfulness is what makes the month worth reading. There is no fraud in what follows, nobody misled anybody, and every card handed over said something true. The difficulty was never that one of them was crooked. The difficulty was that a household looking at three printed titles had no way to tell from the printing what each arrangement actually was.

A title tells almost nothing, and five questions tell almost everything. The five are what each is permitted to do, who pays each, what each answers for, what each may tell a household, and what each cannot. Once any of the four roles is put through those five, the arrangement stops being a matter of impressions.

The five questions have one property that is easy to miss and matters more than any single one of the five answers. The four roles do not stand in the same order on any two of the five criteria. Whichever one goes furthest on what it may do is not the one that goes furthest on what it costs a household, which is not the one that goes furthest on what it answers for. The five criteria genuinely do not compose into an order, and manufacturing one anyway would be the easiest dishonest move available.

The household here is the Bhosale household, invented: Meghna Bhosale, salaried, Ashok Bhosale, who runs a tailoring counter, and Ira Bhosale, who is at school. Rs 42,770/- leaves it in an ordinary month. The household holds Rs 3,67,887/- across two accounts, a recurring deposit, a public provident fund account, gold at its own estimate and a two-wheeler, against Rs 71,594/- owed, leaving Rs 2,96,293/-. Its reachable buffer covers 0.73 months. The Bhosales hold no shares, no fund and no monthly investment plan, and have never taken advice from anybody.

An account of advice built around a household that already has an adviser would be grading a decision somebody else already made, and most readers have not made it. The Bhosale household took up none of the three approaches, so every one of the four roles below can be examined as an offer rather than as a regret.

What are the four roles, in one line each?

A comparison in which one side is drawn carefully and the other three are left as impressions is an argument wearing a table. So all four get defined first, in their own right, before a single criterion is applied. Each also has a full treatment of its own elsewhere in this sequence and none is rebuilt here.

The one who acts for somebody else

An agentSomebody who acts for a particular principal in placing what that principal offers. The word describes who they act for, not how good they are at it. acts for a particular principal. Acting for a particular principal is the whole of the definition, and everything else follows from it. On 6 April a person whose desk card read Relationship Manager suggested something to Meghna Bhosale while she was at a bank branch renewing the recurring deposit. He is an employee of the bank, the bank pays him a salary, and the bank is paid by whoever manufactures what he places. He charged this household nothing and did nothing he was not entitled to do.

The word to hold on to is principalWhoever an agent acts for, which is not necessarily the household in front of them. Working out who the principal is answers most of the five questions at once.. An agent has one, and it is not automatically the household across the desk. Everyday version: the assistant who helps a customer choose a shirt works for the shop. He may be extremely helpful, may know the stock better than anybody, and will not send that customer next door. Nobody calls that dishonest, because everybody knows whose shop it is. The difficulty in the branch is only that the shirt is not visibly a shirt.

The one who places what others manufacture

A distributorSomebody who places what other institutions manufacture and is paid by those institutions rather than by the household. The word describes the payment route, not the quality of the explanation. places what other institutions manufacture and is paid by those manufacturers. On 18 April an acquaintance of a cousin came to the house. His card read Financial Adviser. He offered to look at the household's position, he distributes what a number of manufacturers make, and they pay him. He charged this household nothing either.

The title on that second card is not a protected one, and that single fact is why the five criteria beat the printing every time. Two people who do structurally different things can put the same word on a card without either breaking a rule. Robert Cialdini's work on how people respond to authority explains the rest: a printed title, produced confidently, does most of the work before anybody has said anything about the arrangement. None of that is cynicism about the person holding the card, and it applies just as much to the card an educator would print about itself.

The one registered to advise

An adviserSomebody registered to advise, paid under the arrangement their registered category permits. The word is doing regulatory work here rather than describing a manner., in the sense used here, holds a registration to advise and is paid under whatever arrangement that category permits. On 29 April, by appointment, a person who charges a fee to produce a written plan met the household. She takes nothing from any manufacturer, says so in writing before starting, and quoted an invented Rs 12,000/- for the year.

The difference between her and the other two is not tone and not competence. Any of the three might explain an arrangement clearly. She alone is permitted to look at this household's Rs 3,67,887/- held, Rs 71,594/- owed and 0.73 months of buffer and say in writing what that position calls for. The conditions attached to her category are set by regulation and are covered separately.

The one that explains and stops

An educatorSomebody who explains mechanisms and never addresses a particular position. The limit is part of the definition rather than a policy that could be relaxed. explains mechanisms and never addresses a particular position. Nobody named in the three arrangements above pays an educator, an educator places nothing and receives nothing from anybody who manufactures anything, and an educator tells neither this household nor any reader what to do.

The fourth column exists because leaving it out would be the one genuinely dishonest move available in a comparison of this kind. A comparison written by somebody who quietly declines to appear in it has already shown where the flattering answer sits. So the educator goes in the table with the other three, same five criteria, same size of box, and comes off worst on one of them.

Four roles, five criteria, and the fourth column is this guide. Every rupee below is invented. No fee, rate, qualification or threshold is stated as fact anywhere. AN AGENT the branch, 6 April A DISTRIBUTOR at home, 18 April AN ADVISER by appointment, 29 Apr AN EDUCATOR this guide 1. WHAT IT MAY DO measured by how far the permission reaches into what a household holds Place what one principal offers, and explain it. Nothing off that shelf. Place what many manufacturers make, and explain what it places. Advise. Address one household position in writing. Placing is a separate act. Explain mechanisms. Reaches nothing readers end up holding. 2. WHO PAYS IT measured in rupees this household parts with in a year A salary from the bank. The bank is paid by the maker. Rs 0/- billed. The makers, out of the product. Invented trail, never billed: Rs 4,415/- a year. This household, on a bill it can question. Invented quote: Rs 12,000/- a year. Nobody in any of these arrangements. No trail anywhere. Rs 0/-. 3. WHAT IT ANSWERS FOR measured by how far a complaint travels without finding the person again Conduct of the sale, through the bank and the authority that supervises banks. Conduct of the sale, under the terms of its own registration. The advice itself, under the duties her category attaches. Whether what it says is true. Nothing at all about a reader's position. 4. WHAT IT MAY SAY measured by how much of the ground it may cover, paid to place it or not What the arrangement in front of a reader is, and what its own terms say. How the mechanism works, across what it can place at all. What the position calls for. Only this column may say it. Every mechanism here, including ones nobody is paid to place at all. 5. WHAT IT CANNOT SAY measured by the length of the list of things it cannot address at all Whether it suits a household at 0.73 months of buffer. Whether it suits them. It may not charge a household for advice. What any of it will produce. Nobody can tell anybody that. What to do about a household's position, ever. THE ONE IT FAILS. THE FOUR STAND IN A DIFFERENT ORDER ON EVERY ONE OF THE FIVE, SO NO RANKING COMES OUT OF THEM.
Set the four roles against the same five criteria and each column wins one row and loses another, which is exactly why the grid stops at five answers and never produces a sixth row calling one of them best.

Criterion one: what is each one permitted to do?

Start with permission, the criterion people assume they already understand and the one where the assumption is usually backwards. The instinct is that whoever is permitted to advise must be the one whose permission goes furthest. Measure it properly and that is not what comes out.

The measure goes before the answer, because a criterion with an unstated measure produces whatever answer the writer wanted. The measure is how far each permission reaches into what the household actually ends up holding at the end of the month. Not how impressive it sounds. Not how hard it was to obtain. How far into the household's holdings it goes.

On that measure the distributor reaches furthest. He may put an arrangement made by any of a number of manufacturers into this household's hands, and once it is there the household holds it. The agent reaches almost as far along one line only: what his principal offers and nothing off that shelf, a narrower reach rather than a smaller one. The registered adviser may address the position in writing, and the placing is a separate act somebody else performs. An educator reaches nothing at all: no reader has ever ended up holding anything because of a sentence in a guide.

The role permitted to advise is not the role whose permission most changes what a household holds, and that sentence is worth more than the whole grid. A household that came away from the three April meetings holding something different would have got there through the two people not registered to advise it.

How far does each permission reach into what a household ends up holding? One criterion, one scale. The order here is not the order on any of the other four. REACHES NOTHING THE HOUSEHOLD HOLDS PUTS THINGS INTO THE HOUSEHOLD'S HANDS AN EDUCATOR Explains mechanisms and places nothing at all, for anybody. AN ADVISER Addresses the position in writing. Placing is separate. AN AGENT Places one principal shelf, and nothing off it. A DISTRIBUTOR Places what many manufacturers make, across a wide shelf. Nothing a reader holds has ever changed because of a sentence here. The plan is written. What the household then does is a separate step. One line, and the household holds it the moment the form is in. Many lines, and the household holds it the moment the form is in. THE ONE PERMITTED TO ADVISE IS NOT THE ONE WHOSE PERMISSION MOST CHANGES WHAT A HOUSEHOLD HOLDS.
Measured by how far a permission reaches into what a household actually ends up holding, the distributor stands furthest and the educator stands nowhere, which is the exact reverse of where the two of them stand on what the household pays.

Criterion two: who pays each one, and out of what?

Payment is the criterion where the four separate hardest, and the one where most writing on the subject teaches the wrong lesson with the best intentions. The other order is how the wrong lesson gets taught, so the arithmetic comes first and the interpretation second.

Three of the four are paid and one is not. The agent is paid a salary by the bank he works for, and the bank is paid by whoever manufactures what he places. The distributor is paid directly by the manufacturers. The registered adviser is paid by the household, on a bill it receives. An educator is paid by nobody named in those arrangements, takes nothing from any manufacturer, and carries no trailA payment that continues year after year out of a product, paid by whoever manufactures it to whoever placed it, for as long as the household holds the thing. of any kind.

Now the arithmetic, on invented figures throughout. Suppose what was placed carried an invented trail of 1.2 per cent a year, paid by the manufacturer out of the product before the household ever sees a value. On Rs 3,67,887/- of holdings the trail comes to Rs 4,414.64, or Rs 4,415/- a year. The registered adviser quoted an invented Rs 12,000/-. So the trail that charged this household nothing costs it Rs 4,415/- a year, the bill costs Rs 12,000/-, and the invisible route is Rs 7,585/- a year cheaper.

The arithmetic runs opposite to what a reader who has heard about hidden commissions expects. The visible fee is not automatically the cheaper one. At this household's size it is dearer by a wide margin, and an account that let a reader believe otherwise to make a tidy point about transparency would be teaching something false to win an argument.

Follow each payment backwards to whoever actually parts with the money. Dashed means the household never sees it. Solid means a bill arrives. Every amount is invented. THE MANUFACTURER pays the bank out of the product itself. THE BANK pays a salary to the person at the desk. THE AGENT at the branch desk, 6 April. Rs 0/- BILLED Two payments, and neither is shown. THE MANUFACTURER pays a trail out of the product itself. invented 1.2 per cent a year on what is held THE DISTRIBUTOR at the house, 18 April. Rs 4,415/- A YEAR Invented, and never billed to anybody. THE HOUSEHOLD pays out of money it has already received. a bill arrives, and can be questioned line by line THE ADVISER by appointment, 29 April. Rs 12,000/- A YEAR Invented quote, and visible on a bill. NOBODY in any of the three arrangements above. no payment travels this line THIS GUIDE places nothing and receives nothing. Rs 0/- No bill and no trail, from anybody. TWO OF THESE FOUR PAYMENTS NEVER APPEAR ON ANYTHING THE HOUSEHOLD IS HANDED.
Traced backwards, two of the four payment routes never touch a document the household receives, one arrives as a bill it can question line by line, and one does not exist at all, which is the whole of the difference between them on this criterion.

The everyday version is worth carrying around. Two people help a customer buy a fridge. One charges Rs 500/- to walk the shop with that customer and takes nothing from the shop. The other takes nothing from the customer and is paid by whichever manufacturer's fridge leaves the shop. Both may be perfectly honest and know fridges extremely well, and the second costs the customer money too. The cost sits inside the price of the fridge instead of on a slip in the customer's hand.

Everything above is one axis, in rupees, and it is not the only axis. The Rs 4,415/- cannot be seen, is not billed, and varies with what is sold. The Rs 12,000/- can be seen, is billed, and does not depend on what is recommended. Neither ranks above the other in general: ranking them would be advice, and the right answer depends on facts about a household that no general account holds.

The rupees run one way. What is owed about the position runs the other. Both amounts are invented. Read the two rows together or neither of them means anything. 12,000 4,415 0 SALARY never shown here AN EDUCATOR Rs 0/- nothing, from anybody AN AGENT Rs 0/- billed a salary nobody sees A DISTRIBUTOR Rs 4,415/- invented, out of the product AN ADVISER Rs 12,000/- invented, on a bill OWED TO THIS HOUSEHOLD ABOUT ITS OWN POSITION nothing at all conduct of the sale only conduct of the sale only the advice itself DEAREST IN RUPEES, MOST OWED ABOUT THE POSITION. NO ORDER COMES OUT OF THAT PAIR.
On this household the cheapest of the four in rupees is the one with the least owed to it about its own position, and the dearest is the only one that may address that position at all, which is two facts rather than one ranking.

There is a size at which the two costs meet, and working it out is the only honest way to describe the relationship. Rs 12,000/- is exactly 1.2 per cent of Rs 10,00,000/-. Below that amount held the trail route costs fewer rupees in a year; above it, more. The Bhosale household holds Rs 3,67,887/-, well under the crossing point, so at its size the invisible arrangement is the cheaper one in rupees.

Two things about that crossing point. The crossing point moves the moment either invented number moves, so the crossing point is a property of those two figures and nothing else. And a household near it in rupees still has the other four criteria left to look at, so the crossing settles nothing by itself.

The two costs cross at one amount held, and this household is left of it. Cost to the household in a year, in rupees, against what the household holds. Both figures invented. Rs 12,000/- Rs 24,000/- Rs 0/- Rs 0/- held Rs 10,00,000/- held Rs 20,00,000/- held THE TRAIL ROUTE, AT AN INVENTED 1.2 PER CENT A YEAR never billed, and it climbs with whatever is held THE BILLED FEE, AT AN INVENTED Rs 12,000/- Left of the crossing the trail route costs fewer rupees in a year. Right of it, the billed fee does. Neither half of that sentence is a recommendation. Rs 7,585/- apart at Rs 3,67,887/- held Rs 10,00,000/- HELD: the two cost exactly the same, and everything else in this guide is still undecided. BOTH NUMBERS ARE INVENTED. THE CROSSING MOVES THE MOMENT EITHER OF THEM MOVES.
An invented flat fee of Rs 12,000/- and an invented trail of 1.2 per cent a year cost the same at Rs 10,00,000/- held, so this household at Rs 3,67,887/- sits on the side where the trail costs Rs 7,585/- a year less.

Mutual Funds Bootcamp — Fin Maverick

Criterion three: what does each one answer for, and to whom?

AccountabilityWhat somebody answers for, and to whom. Two separate questions, and a role can be heavy on one of them and light on the other. is two questions wearing one word, and prising them apart is most of the work here. The first question is what each answers for. The second is who each answers to. A role can answer for a great deal to a body that is hard to reach, or for very little to a body that answers the telephone.

The measure used here is the practical one: how far a complaint can travel without the household first having to find the individual again. The Bhosales know no surnames, kept no cards, and would be starting from a memory of a desk and a date, and the measure is chosen for exactly that reason.

On that measure the agent goes furthest. He acts for a principal, and that principal is an institution with a branch, a name, a complaints process and a supervising authority. The household does not need to find him; it needs to find the branch, and the branch does not move. The distributor answers for the conduct of the sale under his own registration, a real route with a real authority behind it, but one that requires identifying the person. The registered adviser answers for the advice itself, the largest thing of the four to answer for, and that too requires identifying her. An educator answers only for whether what it says is true, and for nothing at all about any reader's position.

The column with the least owed to this household about its own position has the complaint route that is easiest to walk into, which is one of several places where this comparison refuses to line up. Nothing there says the branch is safer. The claim is that the machinery is nearer, a different claim and a smaller one.

Everyday version. A meal from a large chain and one from the stall at the end of the lane can both be excellent and both go wrong. If the chain meal goes wrong there is a manager, a printed bill and a process. If the stall meal goes wrong the man has to be found, and he moves. Nobody sensible concludes from that alone that the chain is better food. The complaint route is a fact about where the process sits, and it belongs beside the other facts rather than on top of them.

Criterion four: what may each one tell a household?

Now the criterion most readers arrived for, the one that decides whether a conversation is worth having at all. The measure is how much ground each may cover, whether or not anybody is paid to place what is on it.

On that measure the educator goes furthest. An educator may explain every arrangement in this area, including the ones no manufacturer makes and the ones nobody is paid to place. Nobody pays for that ground to be covered, and that is exactly why it can be. The registered adviser may explain and may also address the position. The distributor may explain the mechanism of what he can place. The agent may explain what his principal offers.

Each of the four can tell a household something the other three cannot, and the four things differ in kind rather than in degree. Four differences in kind are what this criterion establishes, and the drawing below puts them in boxes.

The April meetings, one at a time. The person at the branch could open the actual document in front of Meghna Bhosale and read its terms out that afternoon, and nobody else in the month was placed to do it. The distributor could explain how the same kind of arrangement works across several manufacturers and say what each pays him, and the branch employee cannot do that about a shelf he does not carry. The registered adviser could take Rs 3,67,887/- held, Rs 71,594/- owed, 0.73 months of buffer and a daughter at school, and write down what that position calls for. An educator can explain every one of those mechanisms, including the ones none of the three had reason to mention.

Four roles, and four different things only that role can say. Read across. Nothing in one panel substitutes for anything in another. ONLY AN AGENT can open the actual document that is in front of a household, that afternoon, and read its own terms out of it. ONE SHELF, IN THE ROOM. ONLY A DISTRIBUTOR can compare the same mechanism across several manufacturers, and say what each of them pays him to place it. MANY SHELVES, ONE TRADE. ONLY AN ADVISER can take Rs 3,67,887/- held, Rs 71,594/- owed and 0.73 months of buffer and write down what that position calls for. ONE HOUSEHOLD, IN WRITING. ONLY AN EDUCATOR can walk the whole area, including the parts no manufacturer makes and nobody anywhere is paid to place at all. EVERY SHELF, NO ROOM. FOUR DIFFERENT THINGS, DIFFERENT IN KIND AND NOT IN DEGREE. None of the four substitutes for another, so more of one never makes up for none of a second.
Each of the four can say one thing the other three cannot, and because those four things differ in kind rather than in degree, having a great deal of one of them never adds up to having any of another.

Which of the four may say what this household's position calls for?

Criterion five: what can each one not tell a household?

The fifth criterion turns a table into an honest one, because it is where each column names what is out of its reach. The measure is the length of the list of things a role cannot address at all, and the shorter that list, the further forward this criterion puts the role.

Start with the shortest list. The registered adviser cannot tell this household what any of it will produce. The list ends there, and the limit is not a gap in her registration but a fact about the future, and the future is not accessible to anybody at any fee. Everything else on the household's mind, whether the buffer is thin, whether the Rs 71,594/- owed should be cleared first, whether a monthly plan belongs at 0.73 months of cover, is inside what she may address.

The distributor's list is longer. He cannot say whether an arrangement suits this household, and he may not charge it for advice. The agent's list is longer still, because on top of both, anything off his principal's shelf is outside what he may discuss. Neither is a criticism of either person. Each list is a consequence of the arrangement, and both men told the household the truth about what they could speak to.

And the educator has the longest list of the four by a wide margin, so the fifth criterion is the one it fails and the one the control below opens on. An educator cannot tell a reader anything about that reader's own position. Not a little. Not with more detail. Not at all.

Where does an educator stand on all five criteria?

Every criterion above has already been applied to the educator alongside the other three, and that is why the educator sits in the grid rather than in a note at the end. Collected in one place, the five answers read as follows.

On what it may do, an educator explains mechanisms and reaches nothing a reader ends up holding. Last. On who pays it, nobody named in these arrangements does, there is no trail, and the cost to a reader is Rs 0/-. First. On what it answers for, an educator answers for whether what it says is true and for nothing about any reader's position. Last again. On what it may tell a household, an educator may cover the whole area including the parts nobody is paid to place. First. On what it cannot tell a household, an educator has the longest list. Last.

First, last, first, last, and last, and an account that quietly left itself out of its own table would have kept two of those out of sight. The two firsts are real and the three lasts equally so, and any summary keeping one set and dropping the other misrepresents both.

The fourth column is judged rather than confessed, and there is a reason for that. A disclaimer at the foot of a document is read by almost nobody and is written to be survivable rather than understood. A column in the same grid, the same size of box, the same five rows, is read by everybody who reads the grid. If a limit matters, it goes where the reader is already looking.

Why does the educator appear in its own comparison?

Portfolio Management Bootcamp — Fin Maverick Value at Risk and What It Hides — free micro-course from Fin Maverick

Which criterion does an educator fail, and how badly?

The fifth. An educator cannot tell a household what to do about its own position, and that is worth saying in the plainest words available rather than in the careful ones.

Somebody who has read all nine sequences has covered a great deal of ground. A household sheet and what belongs on it. The cost of a loan and how that cost accumulates. A buffer, and how many months of what it covers. The work insurance does that a buffer cannot. Why a return cannot be promised. The arithmetic retirement needs. Where advice begins and who may give it. The rights that attach when something goes wrong, and what fraud looks like. All of that is a real education, and nothing about it is hollow.

And a reader who finishes all of it may reasonably feel they now have what a registered adviser would have given them, and they do not. A reader has every mechanism and none of the applicationTaking a mechanism and working out what it means for one particular household, with that household's own numbers and circumstances to hand.. Mechanism and application are two different things, and no quantity of the first ever becomes the second.

Here is why, and it is not modesty. The limit is a structural limitA limit that follows from what something is rather than from how hard it tries. More effort and more detail move it not at all. rather than a shortfall of effort. Application means working out what a mechanism means for one particular household, and a particular household is exactly what an educator does not have and cannot obtain. An educator does not know whether a household's income is one salary or three, whether somebody in the house is unwell, whether a wedding is eighteen months away, whether the roof needs doing, or whether the money held is free to move at all. Every one of those facts changes the answer, and an educator has access to none of them.

So a tenth sequence would not fix it, and neither would a hundredth. Depth is not the axis the limit sits on. An educator that could tell a household what to do about its own position would not be a deeper educator; it would have become one of the other three columns, and would then owe that household what those columns owe.

Nine sequences of mechanism, and an empty box that more sequences never fill. The limit on the right follows from what an educator is, not from how much has been written. WHAT A READER CAN FINISH WHAT NO AMOUNT OF IT PRODUCES 1. Money basics and the household sheet 2. Credit, debt and what borrowing costs 3. Household resilience and the buffer 4. Insurance and what a buffer cannot absorb 5. Investing literacy and the promise nobody may make 6. Retirement and the longest goal 7. Advice, and who may give it 8. Rights and recovery when it goes wrong 9. Fraud, and what it looks like from inside WHAT THIS MEANS FOR A READER'S OWN HOUSEHOLD, IN WRITING EMPTY Not because the stack on the left is too short. Because filling this box needs a reader's income, health and obligations, and what the money they hold is already understood to be for, and an educator has none of that and cannot obtain it. A TENTH SEQUENCE DOES NOT FILL THE BOX. IT HOLDS A DIFFERENT KIND OF THING.
Nine finished sequences of mechanism leave the application box empty, and it stays empty however many more are written, because filling it needs facts about one household that an educator never holds.

None of that means the nine sequences were wasted. A reader who has finished them can sit in front of any of the other three columns and know what is being looked at: what they may do, who pays them, what they answer for, what to ask, and which questions they cannot answer. Knowing that much is a considerable thing to walk in holding, and almost nobody does. Knowing that much is still not a plan with one household's own numbers in it.

What can an educator not tell a household?

Value at Risk and What It Hides teaches you to compute value at risk three ways, interpret the figure, and say precisely what it refuses to describe.

What can none of the four tell a household?

One question defeats all four columns at once, and it happens to be the question most people arrive with. What will any of it produce?

Nobody in this comparison can answer that. Not the branch employee, not the distributor, not the registered adviser at any fee, and not an educator after nine sequences. The answer is not a matter of registration or of price. The answer depends on things that have not happened yet, and no arrangement anybody enters into moves that. A fee buys somebody's attention, their duty and their working time, and it does not buy access to the future. Nobody is selling that.

Everyday version, the clearest one available. A very good doctor can examine a patient, name what is wrong, say what usually follows and what to watch for. She cannot say what that patient's health will be in eleven years. Nobody thinks less of her for it, and nobody would trust a second doctor more for claiming otherwise. Somebody who does answer that question confidently has revealed something useful about themselves rather than about the future.

Count the answers in the bottom row. There are none. Four questions, four roles, and one row where every single cell comes back empty. AN AGENT A DISTRIBUTOR AN ADVISER AN EDUCATOR What is this arrangement, in its own terms? YES YES YES YES How does the mechanism underneath it work? YES YES YES YES What does this particular position call for? NO NO YES, ONLY THIS ONE NO What will any of it actually produce? NO ANSWER NO ANSWER NO ANSWER NO ANSWER NOBODY IS REGISTERED TO KNOW THE BOTTOM ROW, AND NO FEE ARRANGEMENT CHANGES THAT.
Three of the four questions have at least one column that can answer them, and the fourth question comes back empty in all four columns, which is a fact about the question rather than about the roles.

What can none of the four tell a household?

How do the four stand when the five criteria are put side by side?

Everything above in one place, so nothing that follows depends on an illustration a reader cannot quote. A criterion without a stated measure produces whichever answer the writer preferred, so the measure for each criterion sits in the first column.

Criterion, and how it is measuredAn agentA distributorA registered adviserAn educator
1. What it may do. Measured by how far the permission reaches into what a household ends up holdingPlaces one principal's shelf and explains itPlaces what many manufacturers make, across a wide shelfAdvises. Addresses one household's position in writingExplains mechanisms. Places nothing at all
2. Who pays it. Measured in rupees this household parts with in a yearThe bank, as salary. The bank is paid by the manufacturer. Rs 0/- billedThe manufacturers, out of the product. Invented trail: Rs 4,415/-The household, on a bill it can question. Invented quote: Rs 12,000/-Nobody in any of these arrangements. Rs 0/-, and no trail
3. What it answers for. Measured by how far a complaint travels without finding the person againConduct of the sale, through the bank and the authority that supervises banksConduct of the sale, under the terms of its own registrationThe advice itself, under the duties her category attachesWhether what it says is true. Nothing about a household's position
4. What it may say. Measured by how much ground it may cover, paid to place it or notWhat the arrangement in front of a household is, in its own termsHow the mechanism works, across what it can place at allWhat the household's position calls for. Only this column may say itEvery mechanism here, including ones nobody is paid to place
5. What it cannot say. Measured by the length of the list it cannot address at allWhether it suits a household at 0.73 months of bufferWhether it suits the household. It may not charge for adviceWhat any of it will produce. Nobody can say thatWhat to do about a household's own position, ever. The one it fails

Read down any column and it wins a row and loses a row; read across any row and the four stand in an order that the rows above and below both contradict. Row two rests on two invented illustrations, the Rs 4,415/- and the Rs 12,000/-, and every real fee, rate and qualification in this area is set by regulation.

Across the five criteria, does the same role stand furthest forward each time?

Play with it

Step through the five criteria and watch the four columns reorder

One variable moves: which criterion is being applied. Everything else is held. The four roles stay the same four, and they change places every time the criterion changes. The control opens on the fifth criterion, the one an educator fails.

No such ordering exists to be drawn, so the control marks no role preferable overall at any setting. Held constant: the same four roles, the same invented household, and Rs 3,67,887/- held.

How did the four stand in this household's actual April?

Abstractions settle when they are run against one month. Here is the Bhosale household's April with all four columns applied to it, every figure invented, and the household's own numbers doing the work.

WhoPermitted toPaid byCost to this household in a year
6 April, at the branch. A person whose desk card read Relationship ManagerPlace what his employer's arrangements cover, and explain themThe bank, as salary. The bank is paid by whoever manufactures what he placesRs 0/- billed
18 April, at the house. An acquaintance of a cousin, card reading Financial AdviserPlace what a number of manufacturers make, and explain the mechanismThose manufacturers, out of the product, at an invented trail of 1.2 per centRs 4,415/-
29 April, by appointment. A person who charges to produce a written planAdvise. Say in writing what this household's position calls forThe household, on a bill it receives. Nothing from any manufacturerRs 12,000/-
At any time. An educatorExplain every mechanism named above and address no position at allNobody named in any of the three arrangements aboveRs 0/-

The middle row carries the sequence and is worth working once. An invented trail of 1.2 per cent a year on the Rs 3,67,887/- this household holds is Rs 4,414.64, or Rs 4,415/- to the nearest rupee. The trail is never billed, appears on no statement the household receives, and is paid out of the product before the household ever sees a value. Against it sits Rs 12,000/-, on an invented quote, printed on a bill that arrives once and can be queried line by line.

Every one of the four could tell this household something the other three could not, and none could tell it what its own position called for except the one it would have had to pay. That sentence is the whole comparison in miniature, and it is why no ranking arrives at the end of it.

One more figure from the same April, and it stops the arithmetic being read as a slogan. Rs 12,000/- is 28 per cent of what leaves this household in a month and nearly two fifths of the Rs 31,320/- it can reach inside a week. Rs 12,000/- is a large amount for the Bhosale household, and that is a fact about the household's size rather than a reason to do or not do anything. A different household would read the same Rs 12,000/- as a rounding error, and both readings are correct.

Where this comparison goes wrong

The failure is reading these five criteria as a ranking, the easiest mistake available, and it happens because tables look like league tables and readers are trained by every other table they have seen.

Watch the three facts refuse to compose. At this household's size, the cheapest of the four in rupees is the one with the least owed to the household, the most expensive is the only one that may address its position, and the free one cannot address it at any price. Sorting them does not terminate. Ordered by rupees: the educator first, the registered adviser last. Ordered by what is owed about the position: the registered adviser first, the educator last. Ordered by who may address the position at all: three of the four tie at nothing. There is no fourth sort that reconciles those, and producing one anyway would mean quietly adding a fact about the household that nobody here has.

The second failure belongs to the educator, and is why the fourth column exists at all. A reader who has finished nine sequences may reasonably feel they now hold what a registered adviser would have handed them. They do not. A reader holds every mechanism and none of the application, and that gap is a property of what an educator is rather than a shortfall in how much has been written.

The cost of the first failure is a decision made on a table that never said what the reader thought it said. The cost of the second is a household that believes it has a plan when what it has is an education. A plan and an education are different objects, and they fail in different ways.

Three facts, three sorts, and three different orders out of them. The sort does not terminate, so no ranking follows from the facts. FACT ONE The cheapest of the four in rupees is the one with the least owed to this household about its position. FACT TWO The dearest of the four, at an invented Rs 12,000/-, is the only one that may address that position. FACT THREE The one that costs nothing at all cannot address that position at any price, ever. EVERY SORT THAT CAN BE RUN ON THEM SORT BY RUPEES this guide first, the adviser last SORT BY WHAT IS OWED TO THE HOUSEHOLD the adviser first, this guide last SORT BY WHO MAY ADDRESS THE POSITION one column qualifies, three tie at nothing THREE SORTS, THREE ORDERS, AND NO FOURTH THAT SETTLES IT. A RANKING NEEDS A FACT ABOUT THE HOUSEHOLD THAT THIS GUIDE DOES NOT HOLD.
Sorting the same three facts by rupees, by what is owed and by who may address the position produces three different orders, so the only way to reach a single ranking is to add a fact about the household that no general account holds.

The cheapest arrangement owes this household least and the dearest is the only one that may address its position. Which of the two is better?

Reading a Fund Factsheet Properly teaches you to extract the four things on a fund factsheet that carry information and ignore the rest.

What should a household actually do with these five criteria?

The five questions establish facts. The decision that follows belongs to the household, and an educator could not make it well even if it were permitted to.

Concretely, in the room, with somebody across the desk. The first question is what they are permitted to do, and the thing to listen for is whether the answer names a category or describes a manner. The second is who pays them, and where it costs the household nothing, the second half matters: then who does, and out of what. The third is what they answer for and to whom, and whether the answer names a body or a feeling. The fourth is what they can say about the household's own position, in writing. The fifth is what they cannot help with. The answer to that last question is the most informative sentence anybody in this comparison will offer, and the willingness to answer it at all is worth more than the answer.

Two things do not follow. Whoever costs nothing is not thereby cheap. Two of the four cost nothing in different senses, and one of those senses involves money moving. And a printed title does not settle which column somebody is in. The gap between the printing and the arrangement is the whole subject.

A household walks away with something other than a decision. The five questions leave it able to sit across a desk and know which of them has just been answered and which has been steered around. Five questions take about four minutes to use, and they are available to a household with Rs 3,67,887/- as fully as to one with a hundred times that.

India

Where each of these permissions is actually set

Every permission and every obligation described here is set by regulation, and regulation changes. Investment advisers, research analysts and the distribution of market-linked arrangements sit with the Securities and Exchange Board of India at sebi.gov.in, and that authority also publishes an investor charter and a register. Insurance intermediaries, including agents and brokers, sit with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India at irdai.gov.in. Banking channels and the conduct of what happens at a bank counter sit with the Reserve Bank of India at rbi.org.in. Pension arrangements sit with the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority at pfrda.org.in. The Association of Mutual Funds in India at amfiindia.com maintains a distributor register and is a second-line source rather than the regulator. Every fee, commission rate, trail, qualification, examination, net worth criterion, registration threshold, cooling-off period and penalty must be confirmed at the authority's own site on the day it is needed.

How to check whether somebody holds the registration they claim is covered separately, as are the conditions attached to the registered advising category. The Rs 12,000/- quote and the 1.2 per cent trail belong to one invented household and carry an invented label at every appearance. The Bhosale household's holdings, borrowings and monthly spending were settled in earlier material.
