How to Recognise a Ponzi-Style Pattern in Time

Seven checks work from outside, without inside knowledge and without any expertise. The most useful are the recruitment requirement, the answer to where the money comes from, what consistency actually indicates, and what happens when somebody tries to take money out. Every one of them is observable by anybody.

The structure itself and the six criteria that separate a regulated arrangement from something else are covered separately. The part a household needs on a Tuesday evening in somebody's front room is a short list of things to look at when the books cannot be seen, when who else has joined cannot be seen, and when about four minutes remain before the conversation moves on.

None of these seven checks requires understanding finance, and the limit is what makes them tests at all. A test that only works for somebody who could already have worked the answer out is not a test. So every check below meets one standard: can a person standing in a room, with no documents and no training, actually run it. Five cost nothing but a few minutes. The other two cost something else, named below.

What can I see from outside, and what can I not?

Most of the disappointment in this work comes from people trying to run checks that are not available to them, so the boundary comes first. From outside, the accounts are invisible, and so is whether money arriving on Monday is the money leaving on Friday, how many participants there are, how many have asked for their money and not received it, and who is paid what for bringing somebody in. Almost everything that would settle the question sits on the inside, and stays there.

A structure of this kind has to do certain things in public to work at all, so the boundary is not the dead end it sounds like. The arrangement has to be described to new people, defended when questioned and reassuring to existing participants, and it has to grow. All four of those happen out in the open. Everything the arrangement must do in front of people can be observed by any of the people it is being done in front of.

Behaviour, not books, is what observable from outsideSomething anybody can notice without inside knowledge: what is said, what is asked of people, and what happens when somebody asks a question. means. A shop passed every day works the same way. Its ledger, its rent agreement and its margins are invisible. A passer-by can see whether the shutters open, whether stock moves, whether the same customers come back. None of that is the accounts, all of it is real information, and somebody who watches for a month knows things a person reading one balance sheet does not.

The seven checks are the equivalent for an arrangement described to a household. Each asks about something the arrangement has to do out loud, and each produces a fact rather than a verdict. A fact protects a household. A verdict is an accusation the household cannot support.

THE SEVEN CHECKS, WHAT EACH ONE OBSERVES, AND WHAT EACH ONE COSTS THE CHECK WHAT IT OBSERVES COST 1 Is recruitment part of it Whether bringing others is required 1 MINUTE 2 Where the money comes from Where the answer goes when asked 1 MINUTE 3 What consistency indicates What unbroken payments are said to mean 2 MINUTES 4 Asking to take money out What meets a request to take money out NOT MINUTES 5 Is it registered Whether it is registered, and where 4 MINUTES 6 What is disclosed unasked What is handed over without asking 3 MINUTES 7 A hard question, in a room Who the answer is aimed at NOT MINUTES Five checks, eleven minutes in total, no expertise Two checks cost an occasion rather than time Every check produces a fact about an arrangement. None of them produces a verdict about a person.
Five of the seven checks cost eleven minutes between them and need no expertise at all, while the remaining two cost an occasion rather than time, and every one of the seven produces a fact about the arrangement rather than a verdict on anybody.

The Bhosale household, an invented household, runs all seven of them below. In September it lost Rs 18,000/- to a telephone call, 57.5 per cent of the Rs 31,320/- buffer it had spent nine months building, leaving Rs 13,320/- against the Rs 42,770/- that goes out every month. Five weeks later, on 19 October, somebody Meghna Bhosale has known for eleven years described an arrangement to her at a household gathering. The person describing it was not lying. The presenter had money in it, had been paid on time for two years, and believed it. Everything below depends on that.

Check one: is recruitment part of the arrangement?

Recruitment comes first because it is the most decisive of the seven, and it takes about a minute: the answer usually arrives unprompted inside the description. Only one thing is being listened for: whether bringing other people in is part of how the arrangement works, or merely something that happens because people talk.

The distinction is not about enthusiasm. Plenty of ordinary things spread by word of mouth: a tailoring counter gets customers because old customers recommend it, a school gets admissions because parents talk at the gate. In neither case is recommending part of the arrangement. The customer who recommends the tailor is not paid, not required to do it, and no worse off if nobody listens.

A recruitment requirementBringing in others being part of the arrangement rather than incidental: something asked of the participant, rewarded, or built into how the returns are described. is a different object. Bringing people in is not a side effect of people being pleased: it is asked of the participant, or rewarded, or described as the way the arrangement continues. Sometimes all three, often only the third, and the third is easy to miss because it sounds like ambition rather than instruction. The sentences to listen for are about growing, about the right stage to join, about how many somebody has already brought.

One observation carries this much because a productive arrangement does not need participants and a structure of this kind is defined by needing them. Say that slowly. The sentence is the whole thing. A shop that had no new customers this month still has stock, a counter and a trade. A structure whose payments to existing participants come from the money new participants bring does not merely benefit from growth. The structure stops without them. Growth is not its market. Growth is its input.

So a statement that bringing people in is expected is not a hint or a mood. The arrangement is describing its own mechanism out loud, in a sentence it had to say in order to work. Hence check one's place at the front.

The household heard this on 19 October: after the arrangement was described, the description continued into how many people the presenter had brought during the first year, and how the amounts moved as more joined. Nobody asked for that. The growing arrived as part of the picture because it is part of the picture, and Meghna Bhosale needed no knowledge of finance to notice that it sat in the explanation rather than beside it.

HAVING PARTICIPANTS AND NEEDING PARTICIPANTS ARE NOT THE SAME THING IT HAS PARTICIPANTS Something is done Output exists New people arrive because old people were pleased. Nobody is asked to bring anybody, and nobody is paid for it. If nobody new joins this month: it carries on. The doing is unchanged and so is what the doing produces. IT NEEDS PARTICIPANTS New money arrives It is paid out Bringing people is asked for, rewarded, or described as how it continues. The growing sits inside the explanation. If nobody new joins this month: there is nothing to pay out of, because the arriving was the whole input. The question is not whether people are joining. It is whether the arrangement stops if they do not. The structure on the right is invented for teaching. No real arrangement, promoter or platform is described anywhere.
Recruitment being part of the arrangement rather than incidental is the difference between needing people and having them, and the test is not whether people are joining but whether everything stops when they do not.

Check two: where does the money come from, when the question is asked directly?

The source questionAsking where the money paid out actually comes from. It is the most useful question available because the answer has to describe something. is nine words long and can be asked out loud without embarrassing anybody: where does the money that gets paid out actually come from. The question costs a minute. Asking is neither aggressive nor an accusation. An ordinary arrangement has the answer sitting right there and gives it immediately.

A shopkeeper asked that question says: selling things for more than they cost. A landlord says rent. A lender says interest paid by borrowers. A manufacturer says output somebody buys. Every one of those answers points outward, at an activity that produces something a stranger pays for. A source is exactly that: not a description of the arrangement, but of the world it touches.

A structure whose payments come from the money new participants bring cannot answer this question without describing itself. So the answer moves, and where it moves to is worth watching. The most common destination by a wide margin is how much is being paid: the question was where the money comes from, and back comes the rate, the record, the amounts, how long it has run, how many people are in it. Every one of those is true. Not one is a source.

The second destination is complexity: an explanation with several moving parts, delivered pleasantly, that cannot be followed. The instinct then is to feel stupid, and the instinct is wrong. A shopkeeper explains a shop in one sentence, and so does a landlord, a lender and a manufacturer. Length is not depth here.

The third destination is the person: who runs it, who else has joined, how long they have known each other. Character is genuinely reassuring, and character is not a source either.

Now the part that matters. Plenty of honest people answer badly, so a moved answer is not proof of anything. Somebody presenting an arrangement they only half understand moves the answer without meaning to. The presenter is a participant rather than an architect, and that is usually what is happening. So the check yields a fact rather than a verdict: asked where the money comes from, this arrangement answered about amounts. The fact is worth writing down, and worth leaving as a fact rather than upgrading it.

ONE QUESTION, AND THE FOUR PLACES THE ANSWER CAN LAND THE QUESTION, ASKED Where does the money come from? One minute, asked out loud, in front of everybody. An activity outside the arrangement Selling, renting, lending, making. A stranger pays for something. How much is being paid The rate, the record, the amounts, how many people are in it. An explanation that cannot be followed Several moving parts, delivered pleasantly. Length is not depth. Who runs it and who else joined Character, which is reassuring and is not a source. A moved answer is a fact about a conversation, not proof of anything. Only the top branch names something outside the arrangement. The other three describe the arrangement back to the questioner.
Only one of the four answers names an activity outside the arrangement, and the other three describe the arrangement back to the person who asked, which is the observation the check is actually recording.

Check three: what does consistency actually indicate?

ConsistencyPayments arriving unfailingly, in the same amount, on the same date. It indicates that those payments arrived, and nothing beyond that. is the check that reverses something almost everybody believes, so give it two minutes. The observation is easy: has this arrangement paid, on time, in the same amount, month after month, and is that record offered as the reason to trust it. The answer is very often yes on both counts, and the record is often long.

Here is the reversal. An unbroken run of payments establishes that those payments arrived and establishes nothing whatever about the next one. Saying so is not scepticism. The record contains that much and no more. Thirty six identical payments are thirty six facts about thirty six months, and a fact about March is not a fact about April, however many Marches there have been.

Why does this feel so wrong? Because in most of life consistency really is evidence. A bus that has come at 7:40 every morning for two years probably comes at 7:40 tomorrow, and planning around it is sound. A timetable, a depot and a driver persist behind the record. The inference is not about the record. The inference is about the machine behind it.

So the question is never whether the payments were consistent but what is behind them. For a structure whose payments to existing participants come from money new participants bring, paying consistently is no strain. Paying consistently is the easiest task and the most important one. Consistency keeps existing participants calm and makes the arrangement describable to new ones. The structure pays perfectly, without a missed date, for as long as money keeps arriving, until the round it cannot.

Which means the record on offer does the opposite of what it appears to do. A long unbroken record is exactly what this structure produces while it works, so it is not what separates it from something else but what it has in common with something else, and it is offered so readily because it is the most persuasive thing available and costs nothing to produce.

The everyday version: somebody whose earning is visible, and who has repaid four small loans on the day promised, has said something real. Somebody never seen earning anything, repaying out of money that is also not visible, has said only that four repayments happened. Same record, different weight, and the difference is not in the record.

A PERFECT RECORD, AND WHAT IT CONTAINS Thirty six months, same amount, same date, not one missed 37 1 36 WHAT THE RECORD ESTABLISHES Thirty six payments arrived, on time, in the same amount. Thirty six facts about thirty six months that happened. WHAT IT ESTABLISHES ABOUT 37 Nothing at all. A fact about March is not a fact about April. PAYING PERFECTLY IS THIS STRUCTURE'S EASIEST TASK AND ITS MOST IMPORTANT ONE The record is offered as what separates it from something else. It is what it has in common with something else. Invented for teaching. No real arrangement, record or promoter is described here.
An unbroken run of payments establishes that those payments arrived and establishes nothing at all about the next one, because paying perfectly is what this structure does most easily and most faithfully right up to the round it cannot.
Try it out

Payments have arrived on time, in the same amount, every month for three years, and that record is offered as the reason to trust the arrangement. What does it establish?

Check four: what happens when somebody tries to take money out?

The withdrawal testAsking for money back and watching what the request meets. What is being observed is the response, not whether the money arrives. is the first of the two checks that does not cost minutes, and the reason is worth stating plainly. To run it, somebody has to have money inside already: the household itself, the person who described it, or a participant who can be asked. If nobody reachable has ever asked for money back, the check is unavailable, and an unavailable check is a gap rather than a result. The gap is written down, and the rest continues.

When it is available, watch what the request meets. Most people expect refusal. Refusal is loud, gets talked about, and damages the calm that keeps the arrangement alive, so refusal is not what typically happens. So the response is softer. The money is not refused, it is delayed, and the delay arrives with a reason attached and something offered to make leaving it in more attractive.

Delays happen everywhere, so the part worth watching is the offer rather than the delay. An inducement to keep money in is a different kind of object. Banks delay, insurers delay, employers delay, offices delay, and none of it means anything on its own. So a delay establishes almost nothing.

An inducementA reason offered to keep money in rather than take it out: a higher amount, a bonus for staying, a better arrangement available only to those who wait. is different. When a request to take money out is answered with a reason to leave it in, something has been revealed about what the arrangement needs. An ordinary arrangement is largely indifferent about whether a participant withdraws, and a stated cost for leaving early is a printed term rather than a persuasion. A structure paying existing participants out of money brought by new ones is not indifferent: every rupee leaving has to be replaced by one arriving, so keeping money in is the same input as recruitment, obtained another way.

The distinction to hold is between a printed term and a persuasion. A stated charge for early exit, written down before anybody joined and applying to everybody, is a term. A better arrangement offered in the moment the request to leave was made, and offered because it was made, is a persuasion. The first is in the paperwork, the second is in the conversation, and the second is the observation.

THREE THINGS A REQUEST TO TAKE MONEY OUT CAN MEET A REFUSAL The money is not paid and the answer is no. LOUD It reaches the other participants within a week and destroys the calm. So it rarely happens. A PLAIN DELAY It will take a few weeks, here is why. ORDINARY Banks delay. Insurers delay. Offices delay. It happens everywhere. So it establishes little. A DELAY, PLUS AN OFFER A few weeks, and better terms if the money stays in. QUIET A request to leave was answered with a reason to stay, made in the moment. Only this one needs explaining. A PRINTED TERM IS PAPERWORK. A PERSUASION MADE IN ANSWER TO A REQUEST TO LEAVE IS NOT. Invented for teaching. The check is often unavailable, and an unavailable check is a gap rather than a result.
A refusal would be noticed and a plain delay means very little, so the only one of the three responses that needs explaining is the delay that arrives carrying a reason to leave the money in.
Try it out

A request to take money out is met with a delay of a few weeks and an offer of better terms if the money is left in. Which part of that is the observation?

Financial Literacy Bootcamp — Fin Maverick

Check five: is it registered, and where would that be visible?

How to run a registration check is covered separately. Where the check sits among the other six, what it costs, and how its result is read without being over-read are the parts that belong with the seven.

At about four minutes, the register search is the most expensive of the five cheap checks. Anybody can run a public search without asking permission and without telling anybody. The privacy matters more than it sounds. Several of these checks are awkward to run in front of people, and the register search is not run in front of anybody at all.

A register result is a fact about a register and not a verdict about a person, so read it as one. Absence is not evidence of dishonesty. Most of ordinary economic life sits outside every financial register there is: a tailoring counter is not registered as an investment arrangement, and neither is a neighbour who lends a friend Rs 5,000/- for a month.

Absence does close one door. If the arrangement is described as something that takes money from members of the public and pays them a return, and it is registered nowhere that such activity is registered, then either it is not the thing it is described as, or it sits outside the arrangements that supervise that activity. Both are worth holding, and neither is a statement about anybody's character.

The reverse error matters just as much. Presence is not an endorsement. A registration says a particular entity is registered for a particular activity. A registration does not say that the arrangement described at a household gathering is that entity, or that anything said about it is accurate. So a positive result closes fewer doors than people expect: the register answers one narrow question narrowly.

Portfolio Management Bootcamp — Fin Maverick

Check six: what is disclosed without anybody asking for it?

Reading what was handed over takes about three minutes, and it is the check people find hardest to remember. Noticing something that is not there is harder than noticing something that is. The material is read not for what it says but for what it never gets round to.

Whatever was handed over goes on a table: the sheet, the photographs, the record of amounts, the messages. Then five questions are put to it, and to nobody else. Where the money goes. Who holds it while it is away. Who signs, and for what. What happens if fewer people join next month. Who is answerable if it stops.

Which of the five the material alone can answer is the finding. In an ordinary arrangement most are answerable, some in tedious detail. Material of that kind is built out of exactly these answers. In this structure the material handed over unasked is almost entirely a record of amounts and a picture of people doing well, and the five questions above are the ones it never reaches.

Why does the absence run that way? Because material is produced by somebody, and whoever produces it puts in what helps. A record of amounts helps. Photographs of early participants help. A paragraph on what happens if fewer people join does not, so it never gets written. None of that is concealment in any dramatic sense; it is what happens when a document is built out of what is useful to say.

The household version: somebody selling a two-wheeler mentions the mileage, the service record and the new tyres, not that the second gear catches. Nobody calls that deceit. Selling is exactly that. An absence in a document is only ever a fact about a document, so check six goes down as an observation rather than a conclusion.

WHAT WAS HANDED OVER, AND WHAT THE MATERIAL NEVER REACHES GIVEN WITHOUT BEING ASKED A record of amounts paid out A schedule of dates, none missed Photographs of people who joined early How many people are in it now All four are true, and all four are about amounts rather than about work. NEVER REACHED BY THE MATERIAL What the money is used for Who holds it while it is away What is signed, and by whom What happens if fewer people join Who is answerable if it stops Here the empty boxes are the finding. Absence is the hardest thing to notice. A document is built out of what is useful to say, so what it omits is a fact about the document. Invented for teaching. No real material, arrangement or promoter is described or reproduced anywhere.
What arrives unasked is a record of amounts and a picture of people doing well, while the five questions that would describe an activity are the ones the material never reaches, so here the empty outlines are the finding.

Check seven: what happens when a difficult question is asked in front of others?

Check seven is the one almost nobody runs, and the most informative of the seven. Being the second check that does not cost minutes, it needs an occasion instead: a room with several participants in it, and a question that is genuinely difficult rather than merely curious. The occasion may never arrive, and without it the check is unavailable, a gap and not a result.

When it does arrive, what matters is not the content of the answer but where it goes. A difficult question asked in a room has two possible destinations. Anybody who has ever sat in a meeting or a residents' association gathering can tell the two apart, and nearly everybody has.

The first destination is the questioner. The answer is addressed to the person who asked, in the register of a conversation between two people, and it either answers or admits it cannot. The tells: it is short, it uses the questioner's own words, and it is comfortable saying something is not known.

The second destination is everybody else. The answer is directed at the roomA response aimed at the other people present rather than at the person who asked: reassurance for the audience rather than an answer., and its work is not to satisfy the questioner but to keep the room steady. The move is visible as it happens. The speaker's attention moves off the questioner and across the others, the answer gets longer rather than shorter, and it reaches for the record and for others present who have done well. Occasionally it goes further, placing the questioner gently outside the group as somebody who has not understood yet.

The direction of an answer is a physical fact anybody in the room can see, so none of it needs interpreting. The physical fact is what makes check seven so unusually good. Everything else here requires a distinction to be held in mind: having and needing, a record and a source, a term and a persuasion. Check seven requires only noticing who somebody is talking to.

And notice what it costs the person answering. Somebody presenting an arrangement they believe in, in front of people whose money is in it, has a real reason to keep the room calm, and may be doing it entirely honestly. So the direction is not proof of anything about them. The direction is a fact about what the arrangement needs, observed at the moment it needed it.

A DIFFICULT QUESTION, AND THE TWO PLACES THE ANSWER TRAVELS MOMENT ONE A hard question is asked out loud MOMENT TWO A pause. The room goes quiet MOMENT THREE The answer begins MOMENT FOUR Watch where it goes BACK AT THE PERSON WHO ASKED Short, and it gets shorter It uses the questioner's own words It is comfortable saying not known The other people are not addressed A conversation between two people OUT ACROSS THE REST OF THE ROOM Longer, and it gets longer It reaches for the record and the years It names others who have done well The questioner is placed slightly outside Work done on the audience, warmly THE DIRECTION OF AN ANSWER IS SOMETHING ANYBODY IN THE ROOM CAN SEE Invented for teaching. Keeping a room calm can be done honestly, so the direction is a fact about need, not about character.
A difficult question asked in front of other participants gets an answer aimed either at the questioner or at the room, and which of the two it is happens to be directly observable by everybody present without any expertise at all.
Try it out

Somebody asks a genuinely difficult question in front of eight other participants. What is worth watching for?

Which of the seven cost nothing but a few minutes?

Five of them: checks one, two, three, five and six, about eleven minutes in total. A minute to notice whether the growing sits inside the explanation, a minute to ask where the money comes from and watch the answer go, two minutes on what the record actually contains, four on a public register, and three reading what was handed over for the five things it never reaches.

Eleven minutes. Worth saying plainly. The reason most households never run these is not that they are hard. Nobody told them the checks existed, and the sense in the air is that evaluating something like this needs an expert, a document the household does not have, or an afternoon it cannot spare. None of the five needs any of those.

The two that cost more are checks four and seven, and what they cost is not time. Check four needs somebody who has money in and has asked for it back. Check seven needs a room, and somebody willing to ask a hard question in front of everybody. Both of the expensive checks cost an occasion rather than an hour, so both are frequently unavailable, and an unavailable check is recorded as a gap rather than converted into a result.

Five of the seven cost about eleven minutes in total. The Bhosale household and every figure with it are illustrative: the Rs 18,000/- lost in September, the Rs 13,320/- buffer that remains, and the Rs 42,770/- that leaves each month.

What did the Bhosale household actually find, and what did it decide?

Return to 19 October, five weeks after the household lost Rs 18,000/- on a telephone call and watched its buffer fall from Rs 31,320/- to Rs 13,320/-. Rs 13,320/- is 0.31 months of the Rs 42,770/- that leaves every month. The Bhosale household is not in a strong position. A household in exactly that position hears an arrangement paying a steady amount every month as the most sensible thing anybody has said in weeks. The timing is not a coincidence: structures of this kind reach people at the moment a steady monthly amount would fix something.

The person describing it had known Meghna Bhosale for eleven years, had money in it, and had been paid on time for two years. Nothing in their conduct was dishonest: they said what they had been told, believed it, and had two years of their own bank records behind it. The presenter is not a villain but the normal case. Treating the presenter as a villain would be useless anyway, and anybody could end up in that position.

Here is what the household found, running the five cheap checks over about eleven minutes that evening and the next morning. One: recruitment was in the description unasked, as how many people the presenter had brought in the first year. Two: asked where the money comes from, the answer moved to how much had been paid. Three: the record was two years unbroken, offered as the reason to be confident, and it establishes that those payments arrived. Five: nothing on a register, read narrowly. Six: amounts and photographs, with the five ordinary questions unreached.

Checks four and seven were unavailable. Nobody the household could ask had ever requested money back, and there was no room, no gathering, and no difficult question asked in front of anybody. Two of the seven were gaps rather than results, and the household wrote them down as gaps. Writing a gap down as a gap is the discipline that separates a set of observations from a story.

The household decided to keep its Rs 13,320/-. Nothing had been proved, and the household knew nothing had been proved. Five checks had produced five facts, not one of which pointed at an activity outside the arrangement, and a household holding 0.31 months of the Rs 42,770/- that leaves every month has no capacity to be wrong. The last clause is about the household rather than the arrangement, and a different household could look at the identical five facts and reasonably weigh them differently.

How somebody who does this for a living uses the same seven

A person who assesses arrangements professionally, at a lender, a supervisor or an investigating office, has almost none of these seven at the start either. A professional assessor cannot see the books any more than a household can, so the first moves are close to these: what the activity produces, where the money comes from, and which of the five questions the material never reaches. The difference is not better instincts. The difference is the habit of writing down what was said, and the power, later, to compel what a household can only ask for.

The transferable part is the writing down. A household that records the date, what was described, what the source question got as an answer, and what was handed over, holds something that stays accurate while memory does not, whatever happens next. A household that records what it was told is better off in every direction, not only in the bad one, so the habit is worth having on its own terms.

What happens when the checks come out badly and the person is somebody the household trusts?

The failure that wastes seven good answers

A household runs the checks, gets clear answers, then sets them aside because the person who described the arrangement is somebody it knows and likes. Setting good answers aside like that is the most common way the seven checks fail in practice, and it is not a failure of reasoning. The arrangement is working as designed. A structure of this kind spreads through people who trust each other, and the presenter is normally a genuine participant who believes it and has been paid on time for years.

The usual framing gets this backwards, and the mistake is worth dwelling on. The usual framing says: be careful, people will try to deceive. The accurate one is almost the opposite. In the ordinary case nobody in the room is deceiving anybody. The person describing it is passing on what they were told, in good faith, with their own money inside. Their sincerity is real, and it is also the most effective thing the arrangement has, costing it nothing because it never had to be manufactured.

Which is why discounting a check because of who is presenting it is not a small slip. Information about an arrangement has been gathered and then thrown away on the basis of information about a person, and the two are not the same object. Not one of the seven checks asked whether the person is honest. The seven checks asked what the arrangement needs, what it says when questioned, what it does when money is requested, and what it leaves out. A sincere person can describe all of that accurately without knowing what it means, and usually does.

Calling the behaviour irrational makes it easier to dismiss and harder to avoid, and the behaviour is not irrational anyway. Trusting familiar people is how most of life works. The documented levers, authority, urgency, scarcity and reciprocity, are described in Cialdini's work, and the observation that people under time pressure stop evaluating and start complying belongs to Kahneman. Neither describes a defect. Both describe an ordinary person living among other people, and these structures spread exactly where resistance is lowest.

So the practical instruction is narrow: keep the answer to the check separate from the answer to who is asking, and write both down. Both things can be true at once: the arrangement needs new participants to continue, and the person describing it is decent and has no idea. The two are not in conflict, and the moment one dissolves the other, seven good answers produce no action at all.

The checks come out badly, but the person who described the arrangement is somebody trusted for years. What is happening?

Seven answers get set aside because the household trusts the person. See what follows. Hypothesis Testing — free micro-course from Fin Maverick

Why does somebody who steps away usually say nothing to anybody?

Now the second failure, the one that belongs to the household afterwards and that almost nobody writes about. A household runs the checks, reads the answers, keeps its money, and then says nothing to anybody. Not to the person who described it. Not to the two others in the same lane who joined last month. Nothing.

The silence is neither cowardice nor indifference, and anybody who has been there knows why. Saying something means telling a person known for eleven years that the thing they are in, that has paid them faithfully for two years, that they brought their own relatives into, is not what they think it is. And it cannot be proved. Five facts and two gaps stand behind it, with no documents, no authority, no standing, and nothing that survives four minutes of argument.

So the choice presents itself as: accuse somebody close of something that cannot be supported, or say nothing. Put like that, almost everybody says nothing, and it is entirely understandable that they do. The silence is completely reasonable at the level of the individual household, and it is also how the last two rounds of these structures fill up. Both of those are true at once.

No script fits a conversation with somebody a person loves, and circumstances differ too much for one to be written in advance. Separating two things that get confused is possible, and the confusion is doing real work.

The difficulty here is social rather than evidentialHard because of who is involved and what saying it would cost, not because the answers were unclear or the evidence was thin.. Whether the answers were clear was settled in eleven minutes, and settled cleanly. The unresolved part is not what was found but what saying it would cost: to a relationship, to a household gathering, to a standing among people seen every week. The costs are real. People usually believe they went quiet because their evidence was thin, and the costs are a different kind of problem altogether.

Knowing which of the two is in play obliges nobody to do anything. A social problem has social solutions an evidential one does not, so knowing which is in play sometimes changes what feels possible. Saying nothing about the arrangement and something about the household's own decision, for instance: not that this is a scheme, but that it was looked at and the household's money is not going in. Such a sentence asserts nothing about anybody and accuses nobody. Whether it is worth saying is for the household to decide.

SEVEN CLEAR ANSWERS, AND NOTHING SAID TO ANYBODY WHAT THE CHECKS SETTLED 1. Recruitment is the mechanism 2. The answer moved to an amount 3. The record holds only arrivals 4. Unavailable, recorded as a gap 5. Nothing on any register 6. The absence was the finding 7. Unavailable, recorded as a gap WHAT WAS SAID TO ANYBODY ELSE Nothing Saying it means telling somebody known for eleven years a thing that cannot be proved. WHERE THE DIFFICULTY ACTUALLY SITS, ON ONE SCALE EVIDENTIAL Settled in eleven minutes, and settled cleanly SOCIAL Unresolved, and about who is involved rather than what was found low high People usually believe they went quiet because the evidence was thin. The bars are the reason it was not that.
The answers were settled cleanly in eleven minutes while the cost of saying them out loud stayed high, so the reason for the silence is social rather than evidential, and people usually believe the opposite about themselves.

The checks were run, the household stepped away, and nothing was said to anybody. Why was that hard?

Hypothesis Testing teaches you to run a test, say what it can and cannot support, and recognise a manufactured result.

What does a household do next, and what should it not expect?

The first thing is the flattest and it matters most. Even if all seven come out badly, nothing has been proved about any person: not the presenter, not whoever set the arrangement up, not anybody. Seven facts have been established about an arrangement, and facts about an arrangement are not findings about people. Establishing a fact and making an accusation are different acts, and only the first is in play here.

The second is that the checks are for a decision about the household's own money and nothing else. The decision belongs to the household, and the household does not have to be right about the arrangement to make it. A household can decline for the entirely sufficient reason that when it asked where the money comes from, the answer was about amounts. The reasoning is complete on its own.

The third is writing it down, and it takes five minutes. Date, what was described, who described it, what the source question got as an answer, what was handed over, what a register showed. Not as a case against anybody, but as a record of what was said and when. Memory rearranges itself and paper does not, so the record is worth having whatever turns out to be true.

No household should expect that anything gets recovered. The Bhosale household reported the September call in writing to its bank within forty two minutes and to the national cyber-crime reporting arrangement within fifty seven, and the Rs 18,000/- did not come back. Losing it is the ordinary outcome, not a special misfortune. Most of the time money that has left does not return, and implying otherwise would be a comfort offered at the expense of every reader whose money did not come back either.

A household does get something smaller and real. A decision made on grounds it can state. A record of what happened. A set of checks it can run again in eleven minutes the next time something is described in a front room. A next time is likely: these arrangements travel the same routes, through the same people, into the same lanes.

All seven checks come out badly. Has anything been proved about anybody?

Which authorities apply, and what can only be confirmed at the source?

The seven checks are craft rather than law. The checks describe what an arrangement of this shape has to do in front of people, and that does not change with a border, so they work anywhere. The register in check five is the part that changes, in where it sits and which activity it covers, and it is named rather than described.

India

Where the registers sit, and what to confirm at source

For the securities market, including the registration of intermediaries and advisers, the Securities and Exchange Board of India publishes the relevant arrangements at sebi.gov.in. For deposit taking and for entities supervised within the banking and non-banking arrangements, the Reserve Bank of India publishes at rbi.org.in. For insurance intermediaries, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India publishes at irdai.gov.in. Which register is the right one depends on what the arrangement says it does.

Each requirement, period, threshold, category, form and consequence is set by the authority concerned, and each changes. Every one should be confirmed at the authority's own site before it is relied on.

A wrong rule is worse than no rule. A household that acts on a threshold quoted from memory has been handed something that looks like certainty and is not, and the whole cost lands on the household. A household that checks at the source has one extra task and no false confidence. The extra task is the better trade every time.

Where this stops. Establishing a fact is not making an accusation, and even all seven checks coming out badly proves nothing whatever about any person. Nobody can honestly describe an outcome as certain, an income as promised or a holding as safe, so wording of that kind is a fact about the speaker rather than about the arrangement. Most of the time money that has left is not recovered: the Bhosale household's Rs 18,000/- never came back, and the Rs 13,320/- left against Rs 42,770/- a month was the whole of what it had to decide with. The doubling structure and its arithmetic are covered separately, as is the comparison with a regulated arrangement.
